A quality birch snare from Tama.
By William S. Carroll
I recieved he Tama Artwood birch snare yesterday, and I have to say I'm loving the experience so far. I was looking for a birch snare in the 6.5 X 14 inch configuration for a while now and I kept coming back to the Tama and a Pork Pie model. (Surprisingly this particular drum is nowhere to be found on the Tama website.) I finally chose the Tama and I'm really glad I did. The drum came solidly packaged with no dings or flaws. The dark red finish is flawless and, in a word, gorgeous. The tuning lugs are simple and the badges subtle. The Tama Artwood comes with Evans G1 batter heads (the new level 360's) the snare head is a quality Evans head as well. The throw off is solid and the snares are crisp. I tuned the batter to 85 and the snare side to 82 just as a starting point using a Drum Dial. Coincidentally, this just happened to be a definite sweet spot for a mid-range tuning on this drum. The sound was a combination of a smack and crack. Perfect for rimshot back beats. Buzz rolls and ghost notes were perfectly articulated. Ditto with cross sticking. I'll be fooling around with different tunings, but the sound I have now is one I particularly like. I highly recommend the Tama Artwood birch snare. It looks beautiful and it's got that great warm tone of 100% birch. Oh yeah...one more thing...it's $199 bucks. What are you waiting for?
