A good value package but you have to set up the violin yourself.
By David H
I ordered this package because I wanted a playable violin with all the necessary accessories at the lowest price. I was able to open the case, rosin the bow, position the bridge, tune up the violin and start playing.
If you buy a violin from a shop, they will set it up for you. Setting up is the process of making final adjustments to the violin so that it functions smoothly and suits the musician. Those of us who buy online have to either complete the setup ourselves or find someone to do it for us. The Merano violin comes with an instruction sheet called "How to Set Up a Violin". It tells how to install the bridge, how to tune the violin, and how to rosin the bow. At the very end, the instructions mention that you might also want to sand the bridge down one millimeter at a time until you are satisfied with the way the violin plays. The instructions also mention that you can put rosin on the tuning pegs to keep them from slipping.
If you're not comfortable and happy with the way the violin plays after the basic setup, you need to go back to the Internet and find out how to do the more advanced adjustments. You may want to adjust the string height above the fingerboard, the separation between strings, and the curve of the top of the bridge.
The default setup of the Merano violin didn't suit me. The strings were too high for my taste, which means extra force must be applied by the fingers to press strings down to the fingerboard. Also, the strings were set too close together for my big blunt fingers. The default setup might be okay for someone with long thin fingers. I lowered my strings by sanding down the bridge and filing down the nut of the violin. I increased the separation between strings by filing new notches in the nut with a triangular file. It took me about two hours.
One thing I really like about this inexpensive violin is that if I drop it or make some mistake adjusting it, the maximum possible damage is still less than $100. My other violin is a professional grade instrument and I'm afraid to do any adjustment on it myself for fear of making a mistake. I think the Merano will probably become my favorite violin for casual playing.
Update: After six weeks I'm still pleased with the violin.

there was a cut in the case and it was very dirty. The metronome/tuner was placed in the front pocket ...
Ok... bought this as a gift for our 11 year old daughter. Right out the box, there was a cut in the case and it was very dirty. The metronome/tuner was placed in the front pocket on the case and the box it came in was ripped and the device had fallen out of the box. Trying to get the violin set up was difficult. I recommend taking it to a professional to be properly strung and tuned. The bridge must be set correctly and if you don't know what you're doing that could be an issue. She's had the violin for almost 2 weeks now. The bow is poorly constructed. The horse hairs are constantly falling out. We are having issues with the pegs staying put after tuning. Even her violin teacher was having trouble with it. After practicing yesterday, her E string broke and popped her in the face. Only took 2 weeks... we have only had professionals work with it so far. I think it's a good purchase for a beginner if you don't want to invest a lot of money. But you really get what you pay for. The stand is nice and works great. The violin has nice sound. It came with extra strings but I may need to get all new ones that are a little better quality. For now, it'll do.

We loved hearing her practice and saw the enjoyment she received ...
By Elizabeth P.
My granddaughter played this violin in the 4th and 5th grade for music. We loved hearing her practice and saw the enjoyment she received from learning about music and the violin. I wish all children could have the opportunity to discover music and its appreciation all through their lives.
The Merano 4/4 Full Size Student Violin with Case and stand was a wonderful way to introduce her to music as well as the other children in the family. During the school year the children's band improved and had a musical performance which was delightful. The Merano violin has introduced her to classical music, country and other types of music and we can see her interest growing in music because of the violin and
music lessons. Seeing my granddaughter playing the Merano violin is one of the joys of my life and her listing to music with me is one of the
greatest rewards of my life.
