Violin teacher says NO- spend the extra $20-50
By Samuel Wexler
I'm a professional violinist and violin teacher, looking for inexpensive, but solid instruments for students. They say "you get what you pay for," but honestly the Chinese makers have set the bar high in recent years, delivering way more than you pay for. Paying $100 for a violin would never have gotten you something decent even 10-15 years ago, but the CVN200 by Cecilio is truly a great student instrument for that price. I've ordered several of those, but was curious to see if other companies were rivaling this type of solid build quality but with far fewer accessories, sold at a lower price, so I gave this a try. I'm disappointed.
The string spacing on the nut wasn't cut right, making the G and D strings way too close together. The fine tuners are absolute rubbish, not a single one was working upon arrival and even after spending some time getting them set properly, they just slip off. This makes it difficult to tune an instrument that size.
Keep in mind that getting a decent instrument for a student could make the difference between them liking it and continuing or getting discouraged and quitting. I would have sent mine back right away if I wasn't counting on it for a student to get started on. I recommend spending a bit more on either the Cecilio or Mendini.

Great product, but expect to self assemble.
Fyi for first time users and buyers, this little violin DOES NOT come assembled! Hard lesson for us to have learned. We did what we could do and then took it into a music store for the strings to be set on the bridge and tuned. Our 7 year old daughter is so happy to have this and it fit her size perfect. She is on the slightly smaller side for her age so if your 7 year old is taller than the average, it's possible you may need the next size up. I followed the measuring guide to know what size to order, with her elbow slightly bent.

Perfect beginner's violin!
I couldn't believe I could get a real-working violin for such a low cost. My 5-year-old son has been obsessed with learning to play the violin but I didn't want to spend a fortune on one lest he lose interest quickly or damage it. This was perfect! He's learning to care for an instrument but I know that, even if it breaks, it won't break my bank.
